MySQL Database Crash on web2.bytel.net.uk

Last night we suffered an unfortunate crash of the Windows hosting platform. When the server was brought back up and we began checking websites it became apparent that something was wrong with the MySQL databases. Upon checking, it appears that a number of websites including a number of sites belonging to Net-Root were using MySQL database tables in the InnoDB format. While MyISAM tables survived the crash okay, InnoDB tables are more easily susceptible to data corruption and it appears that a number of these InnoDB tables have crashed and are unrecoverable.

Our advise would be to restore these tables from your backups using the phpMyAdmin interface at http://web2.bytel.net.uk/phpMyAdmin/, or alternatively if the backups are large you can email them to us for restoration to the server. After your database tables are restored however, we would ask that you please (if possible) convert these tables to MyISAM in order to avoid future issues.

DNS Outage

This morning there was an unplanned outage in the DNS service. While the servers continued to resolve hosted domain name, they were unable to recurse (that is, resolve domain names hosted elsewhere).

A restart of the DNS software quickly brought full service back, and we will be investigating the problem with the software vendor.

Mail server now supports Sieve filters

We have added the ability to our mail server to allow user creation of Sieve filters. Sieve filters are a powerful way of controlling your email account, allowing you to setup rules to move emails into different folders, forward copies to other email addresses, setup vacation auto-responders and more.

Changes to the Mail Server

Upon review of the current state of the mail server platform, it has come to our attention that a large amount of diskspace is being taken up by ‘Trash’ folders which are created when using IMAP on some email clients and the webmail system.

As these are essentially deleted emails, we will be implementing a new policy to take effect immediately that will purge ‘Trash’ folders of any emails older than 30 days.

To clarify – this will have no effect on any emails other than those that are stored in a “Trash” folder either via IMAP, or on the webmail system. This will have no affect on incoming email, or those using POP3 email clients.

The outage went ahead as planned, with no unforseen problems. The network equipment involved has been successfully upgraded and we will be planning a future outage to migrate our Cogent circuit onto the new 1Gb capable equipment.

Planned Outage :: 25th October 2008

In order to increase our capacity, a necessary network upgrade is going to be carried out. This will occur on Saturday 25th October, between 7am and 8am. During this time there may be a brief interruption to traffic while the network redirects traffic to our redundant circuits. This will affect all customers.

The end result will be that our MUXs which carry traffic to our main peering provider, Cogent, will then be able to support full Gigabit capacity.
